How Screen Time is Impacting You

It is undeniable that our generation is more exposed to screens than ever before. But what are the actual harms of so much screen time, and how is it affecting our community? With statistics from both research and surveying a portion of the YHS community, this article will open your eyes to the impact of technology on your development.

According to the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth, children from the ages of 5 to 17 should incorporate a combination of: high levels of physical activity, limited sitting for extended periods, enough sleep, and less than two hours of screen time.

They claim that "following these guidelines is associated with better body composition, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness, academic achievement and cognition, emotional regulation, pro-social behaviours, cardiovascular and metabolic health, and overall quality of life." Data from the American Psychological Association shows a 153% increase since 2010 in major depression among US teens, which suggests a correlation between mental health and screen time. After surveying over 20 Yorkies across Grade 10, I found that the average daily screen time was 7 hours-350% of the recommended time. It may be very challenging to not use your phone all the time in this day and age, but you may want to consider all the downsides of your surplused usage. Here are some methods to limit your screen time:

1. Pick up a new hobby.

People often turn to their phones for entertainment when they have nothing better to do. Practicing a hobby that you enjoy is much healthier than spending time on social media.

Some ideas: picking up a new sport, reading books, cooking, playing instruments.

2. Limit your screen time in your phone settings.

3. Set realistic goals for your screen time, and slowly decrease the time you aim for.
