Indigenous S-hulí

"As a country, we still have a long way to go to both heal but also to advance and change the legal framework under which our peoples - our Nations - coexist within a Canada where all peoples can see their reflection when looking into the mirror of the Constitution." - Jody Wilson Raybould

In the last year, Indigenous rights and activism has been gaining attention in the mass. With such support, the push towards equal standing and representation of Inuit, Metis, and First Nation groups within this country has also positively spiked. Despite that, work still needs to be done.

It is not enough to simply know that Indigenous peoples are a minority and need to be advocated for. Every single Canadian, citizen, and immigrant should have the basic understanding of how to respect the culture and traditions of these groups. All of this starts with knowledge.

We must educate ourselves even if we may be put into uncomfortable positions. This is what Indigenous S-hulí revolves around.

Indigenous S-hulí is a non-profit organization that educates youths about Indigenous topics through social media platforms, and supports Indigenous communities around Canada.

The word "s-hul" means "soul" in Hul' q'umi num', an Indigenous language spoken in British Columbia. This name articulates how deeply disturbed we telt learning about Canada's history and the countless cruelties inflicted on the Indigenous peoples; it encapsulates our belief that all humans are equal and capable of thinking and feeling, so they should others as such and vice versa; and lastly, it expresses our wish that expanding ourselves' and others' knowledge about the Indigenous peoples can be impactful. We wish to encourage others to step out of their comfort zones with us as we learn more about the Indigenous history and culture.
